Recently, I've become interested in the so-called "teen help" industry. In the course of my research, I found a site for survivors of Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy, an unlicensed and unregulated religious school that was located near Patterson, Missouri for "troubled" teens. Apparently, the place was a real hellhole. The disturbing but lucrative teen help industry makes victims out of desperate parents and both innocent and troublesome teens. Mountain Park was certainly not the only school out there that allegedly abused teenagers. There are other places that bill themselves as "treatment centers", "teen boot camps" and "learning centers", charging parents anywhere from $2,000 to upwards of $5,000 a month for sub-standard educational services, questionable therapeutic interventions, and traumatic disciplinary practices. I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Armenia from 1995-1997. Here's a little something I scribbled about that time period, which remains one of the most interesting I've experienced to date.

Here's a piece I wrote a few years ago when I was writing web content for a state public health agency. I was a little frustrated when I was writing it, hence the sarcastic flavor of the document. Of course, it never made it to the website I was writing it for (too smart-assed, I guess), but it was fun to write nonetheless! Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was immensely popular at the time I wrote this little story about what happens when teens don't use appropriate contraception. Try not to take it too seriously!

Over the past few years, I've been writing a story about a young woman who goes to a fundamentalist Christian college to please her parents. Unfortunately, my old computer died and that story was one of the few documents that I never backed up on a disk. I have no idea why I never did, but anyway, two years of work has gone down the toilet. Anyway, in order to do a good job, I've had to do a lot of research. Right now, I have to force myself to be content as my husband's amateur editor. I thrill myself and a few select others with my fictional scribblings, which are, for now, safely tucked away for only certain audiences to see. I have taken down the fiction that I had up on this site because I've decided to focus on a new story. I hope to have some new fiction up soon.
